Jim Barrie, the Convener of Dundee City Council’s social work and health committee, said today: “The public need to have confidence in the child protection processes in our communities and the findings of this report help to identify the areas of social work service that need to be improved.
“Our child protection staff are committed, dedicated individuals who work in an extremely challenging environment.
“But I am confident that staff at all levels in the social work department will take the findings of this report and use them to make the necessary changes in the way we look after vulnerable children in the city.
“As the new convener of the social work and health committee, I will ensure that the improvement plan will be actioned as recommended and the new Administration will monitor progress regularly to ensure the necessary improvements are made.
“We intend to support front line staff. It is vital strong leadership is evident and effective and we are aware that the need to reassure the public is addressed.
“I hope all other groups on the council will work with us over the next year to move this forward.”
Councillor Jim Barrie today opened an event which offered a chance to those concerned with Social Work services in the city to give their input and to discuss people’s needs and service developments. Part of the event involved provision of services to adults with learning disabilities.
Jim Barrie said: “These events are valuable both for those who require the services and for those involved in service provision. I was pleased to be involved in the event and to have a chance to hear the opinions of people from across the city.”
Carers across Dundee have been urged to look after their own health while taking care of others. Councillor Jim Barrie, who is Dundee City Council’s Social Work & Health Convenor, made the remarks while visiting the Princes Royal Trust Carers Centre in Ward Road.
Jim said; “Whatever your caring role, it is important to look after your own health and wellbeing. It is easy, when you are busy coping day to day, to forget about your own needs.
The current Dundee Carers Strategy action plan recognises the importance of maintaining and improving the health and wellbeing of carers and has a priority of identifying new and previously unrecognised carers.
Cllr Barrie gave his support to carers checking out their health with staff from the Dundee Healthy Living Initiative which offers health checks and advice.
